Holiday Eating

Sometimes holidays can cause a huge explosion of eating and drinking followed by hours of sitting around shootin' the bull. Not to mention how hard it is to squeeze our regular exercise routines in when all the other festivities are going on.

I have often thought that it is a huge mistake to "take a day off" from eating well just because it's a holiday. If you think about it, there is some holiday to celebrate at least once every month if not multiple times. That doesn't even include birthdays, showers, vacations, etc. And then there are those holidays that we like to stretch into seasons...oh my.

If we abandon our healthy habits every time one of these special occasions comes along, we will be trying to "recover" more than we are just doing what we do. Does that make sense to anyone? That is a very frustrating way to live.

So the idea is to celebrate...

My kiddos at the family frieworks stand.

Natural salesman, he was.

My pyro-maniac (bandana) with his cousin and owner of the stand, Uncle Greg.

Us, on a very hot Fourth!

But remember what the celebration is all about--and it's never about the food...

Okay, if you only weigh 30 pounds, sometimes it can be about the food ;)

So true! It's very hard for me to remember it's NOT about the food!

Oh yeah...that is so true. And so many excuses we can make for not eating healthier, or saying stop to the second hot dog, or more soda, and then not making the time to exercise. Yup, it can turn into something rather ugly. yikes!!

I believe taking a day off to celebrate is just fine. As long as you get back to your mission when the celebration is over. SOmetimes that is hard, sometimes not. But taking a day off is only a bad thing if you don't get back to it the next day.

SO TRUE.
it was an AH HA! moment for me when I realized that I could actually eat the same thing Id make at home when I went OUT to eat :)

that the treat could be the COMPANY and the fact I didnt have to make or clean up.

Good call with this one Keelie. Sometimes I think it is hard to break good company from good-tasting, but bad for you food. I am also happy for sites like Eating Well, which feature healthier options for picnic/party foods. I like the idea of being able to contribute good-for-you foods to the family parties.

P.S. Your family is absolutely adorable.

Keelie--I can so relate to that! I've lost 18 pounds since I started back in April and I remember counting FIVE special occasions in one week! I like what Mike Huckabee said about weight loss--No Exceptions!! The end. There are just way too many opportunities. I finally blew it and made exceptions this week--not enough to gain--but not lose either. Hubby and I had four whole days to ourselves and I wanted to celebrate. Well-- at least I didn't refuse to weigh. I weigh every morning. If I don't, I end up going into denial. Oh--that didn't hurt me! But it always does.

You are such an inspiration Keelie! I'm so so glad I found your blog!

Keep up the good work--you give me hope!

SO true. I love the way you think and thank you for putting that into words. I was mindful the whole time I was home for vacation this past week. I didn't eat right, or well and thankfully it didn't hinder my progress in weight loss that much. I did however find myself making wiser choices. (I ate a ton of watermelon on July 4th vs. eating more hamburgers or potato salad). Well done and might I say the kids are just too darn cute!
