New Car Smell

A few years ago we bought our first new car. I have never been a big car person. I didn't have my own until I was already out of high school. I didn't care what it looked like or what make or model or anything like that. Getting from point A to point B was and still is all that really matters to me. However, owning that new car was pretty special.

We coddled it. Pampered it. Took drives in it just so we could feel the leather on our skin. When it rained we would put down towels on the floorboard to keep the floor clean. We kept a little trash sack in the front to keep it tidy. We made sure the exterior stayed sparkly. The intoxicating fragrance of fresh from the factory goodness was something to celebrate on a daily basis. This was definitely the honeymoon phase.

Pretty soon, the towels got shoved up under the seats. The feel of the leather wasn't as exciting anymore. The trash gradually began to accumulate. The quarters used to wash the car were designated toward other more pressing things. The new car smell yielded itself to banana peels, dirty socks, and fermented apple juice.

When the new car smell of our healthy lifestyle starts to fade, it's time to stop and remember how it was in the beginning. It's time to clean out the unhealthy trash from our pantries. It's time to pull out all the stops to ensure we are successful--put the towels back down, if you will. It's time to look back over old menus, revisit some inspiring blog posts. It's time to make the gym our friend again. It's time to reclaim our new car smell excitement.

We can do it! Remember how awesome it is to have a big weekly loss? Remember how good it feels to finish a killer workout? Remember how the body responds when it is being fed nothing but fresh produce and lean protien? The weekly trips to the store. The money saved from eating out less...I want all that back.

We are nearly half way through 2010. How many of us made a commitment to ourselves back in January? Where are you with that commitment? Now is the time to reassess and act. This year's resolution can amount to more than really good intentions.

Today is the day to decide THIS time is going to be different.

It's not too late. What are you going to do to get that new car smell back?

I brought my lunch today instead of leaving it up to the whims of the hospital cafeteria. That's a good step for me. Always.

Ohhh... I love your Recharge post here. Yes, I want that new car smell.... I actually don't think I've ever had it!!! I want to THINK like a thin, healthy person! I want to only crave and eat good, nutritious food. I want to become a RUNNER! There is still time this year!!! YES!!!

I totally did an overhaul on my eating this weekend... got rid of the stuff that had crept in that I could have occasionally but was having all the time. Dropped beverages back down to water only, and really focused during my workouts. I was rewarded with a 2.2lbs loss, when I've been up and down the last month, bouncing between the same numbers. Sometimes we need a re-commitment ceremony.

I am working hard at smelling like a new car. Some around me may not think I am making much progress, especially after a sweaty workout, but thanks to your post I will believe I am closer to that new car smell with each workout I do.

Yes, that is where I am at! Today I started back at counting points and journaling. My husband actually asked last night if I was still doing Weight Watchers. And I was shocked that I had to be asked if I was still doing it. lol So I'm back at it.

I drove right by Chick Fil A (favorite fast food chicken salad) in order to save money and my health. My salad chicken has no MSG or weird preservatives...and I got lots of dark green leafies, avacado, salsa, tomatoes from our garden...and I spent no extra $$. So two, 'new car' moments for me!! Thanks for the reminders :)

I am still hanging in and enjoying the new car scent! I bought a new dress @ Ross last night that is 3 sizes smaller than I wore "before the change" HOORAY! I AM gonna see this through with His help, of course. I am over half-way to my initial goal. I am excited about this next part of my new life. Thanks for all of the inspiration, Keelie!

I know I had that new car smell about a month or two into my journey. At first, I wasn't really serious. Now I am. Last week was a horrific, emotional upheaval for me, but I listened to my body. Decided I needed a mental vacation and I took it. That is a HUGE step for me. Thanks for the pep talk. You always seem to come around with one when we need it.

Great post! I've planned out an entire week's worth of clean meals to get that 'new car smell' this week. I'm hoping that focusing on my diet will kick-start my energy levels. :)

First time commenter- I love your blog.

I just started, for the millionth time, my journey to healthy and I am trying to stay on track by planning out meals, taking the stairs when I can and recording my food intake. I never used to do that when starting diets so THIS time will be different!.

Inspiring post! I've made a commitment to myself and started WW (again) on Monday. But *this* time will be the last time to start over. It's a whole new journey for me.

Thanks for a great post =)

Thanks for the awesome post. I am still in the new car phase. I am printing this post to keep whenever I start to lose the car smell. It will bring me back to where I Need to be...so I can get to where I WANT to go.
