Facebook & Grains

Don't you think Facebook is funny sometimes? The other day I was thinking about that old philosophical question "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, did it make a sound?" The modern version of that might be something like, "If I do something and don't post it on Facebook, did it really happen?"

Of course I'm being silly and a little sarcastic. I just think it's weird that I know so much about so many people...like where they are every second of every day. The new "check in" thing is kind of creepy if you ask me. But I also feel the urge to check in quite often. Mi Casa...Mi Couch...Mi Potty...

Okay. Sorry. But here's my Top 10 Facebook Statuses. They aren't necessarily mine, but could be. Just the ones that I see most often and they kind of crack me up, or annoy me.

1. A negative remark about the weather.
2. Expressed desire for excessive amounts of coffee...or beer?
3. A vague, cryptic and sometimes hateful editorial.
4. A brief synopsis of why this person's life is THE BEST.
5. Ball game play-by-plays, critiques and cheers.
6. Announcement of a crappy day.
7. Announcement of a fabulous day.
8. Witty quotes or scripture.
9. Recount of funny dialog between parent and child.
10. An open letter to the day of the week Monday.

What are some of your favorite Facebook Status themes?

Thanks for all the advice from yesterday's post!!! I had never thought about some of the stuff that was mentioned and will definitely be implementing some suggestions. Now for today's inquiry...

Healthy Whole Grains: To eat or not to eat--that is the question.

I have been doing a lot of research on this. Up to this point the arguments seem pretty even to me. I personally have no problem losing weight while eating healthy grains (mostly 100% whole) but I know some people who seem to struggle when they do.

I am very confused as to why grains are pushed so heavily by many health organizations and are discouraged by many as well. How can something be really good for you and really bad for you at the same time? Trying to get to the bottom of this.

Any solid information that you can back up with a source or link would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My favorite FB status themes are the wildly passive aggressive "I should be talking to YOU but instead I'm going to post it here and hope that the waves of drama I create upset your boat and you drown..."

My LEAST favorite way is how my family treats FB: as their primary means of communication. After a serious wedding drama debacle last year, I instituted a strict "no family on FB" rule and have stuck to it. Imagine my complete frustration when I log on to my daughter's account (as I'm prone to do every now and then) and see my mom's status telling me my grandmother is gravely hurt and in emergency surgery. Really? Those things STILL WARRANT A PHONE CALL and NOT facebook status. I called, got the scoop and was then told I should add her on FB if I wanted any updates on my grandma.

Eff you, you Effing Eff. I'm NOT adding family. I'll call the hospital myself thankyouverymuch.

*sigh*

Re: grains. I think I have your answer. :D

It depends on your body. haha.

When I started WW, they pushed whole grains and I really got into eating whole wheat (Especially Arnold's Sandwich Thins!) and barley.

I lost about 20 pounds, and became increasingly ill. Really. I actually thought that the lingering bowel problems I have had ovr the years was cancer and I was dying.

I just felt like I had the flu ALL of the time.

Turns out that I am gluten-intolerant. (MD confirmed) When I cut out gluten, I felt so much better that I thought an actual miracle had occurred.

So, if you are NOT sensitive or intolerant to gluten--whole grains are great. If you are, not so much. :)

You mean you dont really want to know when your friends are tking their daily crap? LOL. It gets so crazy sometimes.
Regarding whole grains I am starting to wonder if I have a gluten sensitivity.

I think, that unless you have an intolerance to whole grains, that they are a healthy part of any eating style. They give you fiber among other nutrients.

Everything seems to be bad for you at some point. I think it's all about moderation. Keep a healthy, balanced eating plan and all will be well.

I still marvel at how Facebook has changed our culture in such a short period of time.

Ahh... Facebook, one of my friends said really, the only purpose it has is to stalk people :) I can't say I disagree too much and am trying to get over my addiction. I love it when people's status' are funny. Period. Don't care what about, just love it when they make me laugh (but not at something BAD, just fun stuff like things their kids say!)

Whole grains... here's my philosophy (if you can be philosophical about grains!). Fiber. Fiber, fiber, fiber. Cleans you out, fills you up. I now rotate through steel cut, 5 grain and regular (not quick) oatmeal every morning in addition to my protein (egg whites with one whole egg). I avoid bread as much as possible - a lot of hidden sugar. Buy whole grain/flax/ancient grain when I can't. And I ALWAYS check the Carb count. If it isn't at least 10g of fiber, it isn't going in my cart - and some bread... gasp, is as many simple carbs (straight to your blood stream) as a chocolate bar!! I KID YOU NOT!!

My facebook posts are usually about food. If I am grilling, everyone knows what I am grilling, how I seasoned it, the occasion for it, and so on. I am a grilling machine so I tend to get into it and using facebook to punch out text & pics of it just one way I get my grilling on.

I have a love/hate relationship with fb. Some days I enjoy reading what others are up to, especially old friends/classmates from my past that I don't really see or talk to anymore.

Other days I waste too much time on it and still others I think I'll just delete my account and be done with it. Depends on the moment, what's being said on fb and my mood.

As far as the grains go, I can enjoy grains in moderation. I don't seem to have a gluten intolerance but I do know that if I restrict my carb intake the weight comes off easier.

Just wanted to say, I've been absent from the Blogger world for a little while now (...again), but everytime I come back and read a post of yours...I'm reminded just how much I love you Keelie Gage. Yes, I know it's Ferguson now, but you'll always be Keelie Gage to me. I'm super proud of you, in every way, not that you need that from me but you're an inspiration to me, so I wish you continued success...in EVERY endevour.

Oh and yeah, I've posted some comments that fall in most of those categories LOL.

My all-time favourite (least favourite?) Facebook status post was when my friend posted about how amazing sex is with her bf, and then the comments from her, friends and the bf, went into greater detail about this amazing sex.

...Oh, and her bf is my ex. The guy I lived with for 6 months and split up with a couple years ago.

Ew. Ew. Ew. Overshare.

As for grains, I'm gluten-intolerant so avoid just about all grains because of it. To me, it's like dairy. Half the people out there are telling you it's essential to your healthy, the other half telling you it's detrimental. I think learning as much as you can and listening to your body is really the best way to determine which it is for you.

FB is not the place I really update. I don't get on much but some of posts i've seen have been.

"I am about to sit down and eat a bowl of cereal"

Then all their friends write back and ask...

What kind...

Can you save me a bowl...

Right now in the middle of the day...

Another has been (also related to food)

"I'm driving to get a chocolate ice cream sundae with whipped cream and a cherry on top..."

Then their friends reply back.

Can I go with you...

How come I'm wasn't invited...:(

You know you shouldn't eat this...

Then you can't forget the status of people saying how they argued with their teens or spouse...

It does get ridiculous....

And I bet you always have one or two friends who seem like they never sleep because their on FB 24\7..and some of these I know have kids and a job... hmmmmm??
